wrapped up the heatwave on july 4th. with 90 degrees and the fireworks show and dropped 15 degrees on friday and leveled off close to normal. upper 70s to low 80s comfortable the past three days. storms to the north and far northern california up towards mount shasta and all three northern california radars including kpix5 doppler showing dry conditions. high pressure building in that will be here for two more days. four corners ridge and warm writer inland and keeping the cloud cover off-- weather inland and keeping the cloud cover offshore. on thursday, high pressure is moving out and allowing something else lower pressure to the north moving in and increases the onshore flow from the cool pacific ocean and clouds increase and temperatures decrease starting thursday. but tomorrow, tuesday very close to average and very beautiful day outside. oakland 4 bob normal with a high of-- with a high of 75.

crash are in urgent need of blood. blood centers of the pacific opened three of its bay area locations the day after the crash. now the center is as for more donors especially people with "o" negative and "a-b" types "lisa bloch/blood centers oe pacific 15:29:15;02 alot of the vic who were treated were stabid but now they face multiple ongoing surgeries and tream so we will still need blood quite some time to come jusr these patients. are's watching kp-- you're watching kpis5 at 6. >> we have elderly and a woman with a gentleman who was standing over her. we had somebody that was partially trapped. >> now at 6:30 more tales of rescues and bravery by the bay area first responders who rushed to the plane to help. but first we learned a lot more today about the final seconds leading up to the crash. the ntsb says flight 214 airspeed dropped dramatically in the moments before impact well below the recommended landing speed for a boeing 777. the flight data recorder showed the pilots tried to speed up and then tried to abort the whole landing at the last second but it was too late. plane parts found in the bay and seawall debris strewn on

the runway indicate that jumbo jet hit short of the target landing area. as the investigation continues at the crash site, the ntsb will also be talking to the pilots. >> in our investigation, we are often looking for things that might affect human performance like fatigue, like illnesses or medication like health issues and so we will be looking at all of those things to see if there are impacts on their ability to perform their jobs. >> investigators are also reviewing video of the crash taken by airport cameras as well as cell phone video recorded by others. and what happened on the tarmac in the moments after the impact with nothing short of amaying. first responders rushed into the burning wreckage with one thought. save lives. >> they did it full well-known their were risking their own. >> reporter: there are 21

firefighters stationed at the airport on any given day on saturday, there are 24 who answered the initial call and they went right into that airplane knowing that there were people that need to be saved but not knowing what else they would find. >> o, my god. >> reporter: the alert came at 11:27 a.m. a boeing 777 packed with passengers crashed on landing. among the first on the scene, firefighters stationed at the airport. as the plane burned, the first responders entered the wreckage. >> the only way up was the shute and that's what we did we went up. >> i said if he can do it i can do it. >> reporter: once on board, the firefighters started to look for trapped passengers knocking down fires as they went deeper into the wreckage. it was a race against time. >> by the time we moved the final victim the conditions were that the fire was banking down on us and we had heavy black smoke. so, i feel very lucky and blessed that we were able to

get those people out in that time. >> everybody was doing what they were trained to do. save lives. >> reporter: san francisco police officer jim cunningham was inside the terminal and not far from the crash site. he jumped into action and gave the pilots a utility knife to cut passengers out of their seat belts. he then went into the burning plane without any protective gear. >> overhead luggage compartments blocked an exit getting out of there. and i started grabbing pieces of luggage whatever i could do to get myself inside there. >> reporter: once inside, the first responders rescued trapped passengers some unable or too scared to get out. officer cunningham found an i- phone on the ground and pecked it up. >> i guess it clicked on as mother and daughter's picture on the cover you click it on and looked at it and said someone will want this. >> reporter: he found two iphones and returned them both to the airlines thinking there may be a chance they hold the last memories of a loved one.

the incident commander for the san francisco police department says his officers were exhausted after working all day saturday but elizabeth, not one single person called in sick on sunday. >> wow amazing the heros that were there that day. ann thank you. the chinese consul general paid a visit to survivors at marriott in san jose. the consul general expressed his support to those survivors. >> i told the students they really aircraft tragedy and i told them you are really brave, you are very united and expressed my respect to them. >> he also offered the students visas and passports free of charge and many of them lostthose documents in the plane crash. the chinese students were headed to a summer camp down in southern california. and a group of scots valley

travelers are paying higher- l prices for hotel well a lot of stranded travelers are paying higher than normal prices for hotel rooms near sfo. and some of those prices are changing almost hourly. this morning rooms at this laquinta inn were going for more than $300 and a few hours later they were back down under

200. and other hotels near the airport are also charging more than usual. the traveler says her room rate more than doubled from yesterday to today. >> the explanation was it was business travel because of monday the businessmen come in. >> the san francisco travel association says while there have been some price hiccups most of the hikes are due to increased demand because peak travel season. a handful of hoe et -- hotels in san francisco are offering discounts to visitors effect by the crash. we put a list of those hotels on the website. after last week's messy four-day strike bart and union are heading back to the negotiating table. bart says both sides will meet with mediators throughout the week but contract negotiation won't happen until friday. if they cannot reach a deal another walk jap can happen in august. this morning workers protested outside the general manage are's home demanding she return

survivors. part of the explanation the push to improve airline construction standards and brian is back with us with that part of the story. >> reporter: it's a reaction everybody had all weekend when they look and say so many people survive. how is a good question. one part of the investigation into any airline incident looks at crash survivability. it is safety science. >> okay, my god. it's an accident. >> reporter: the crash of asiana flight 214 happened so unexpectedly the airline trained crew is taken by surprise. but despite the chaos, passengers were able to get out and passenger benjamin leavy told reporters he thinks he knows why. >> what saved so many lives i think today is the fact that they were no fire immediately. >> reporter: experts say that's right. >> you had a situation where we had flame retardant materials in the seats and in the cabin and that contributed to the fact that a be cabin didn't -- that the cabin didn't light off as quickly. >> reporter: kevin hyatt says as chilling as it may look, the

seats actually also saved lives. >> now, with the new seats, and the new fastners and stronger floors in the aircraft, those seats now stay in place. >> now take the time to check the safety card in front of you excellent. >> reporter: and believe it or not he says new in-flight training videos make a big difference, too. >> they are a lot more interesting as i would say and the passenger seems to hold an interest in watching it where as before most of us had the newspaper in front of our face and we didn't pay much attention. >> reporter: he says the new construction standards were key to saving lives in the last three major commercial airline crashes. in indonesia this past april and london heathrow airport 2008 and in toronto in 2005. none of the more than 500 total passengers and crew died. ntsb spokesperson says the asiana crash at sfo will lead to even more safety improvements. >> we have a survival factors

accident as they have past accidents. >> reporter: and they said it will take 12 to 18 months. >> yeah thanks. >> reporter: all right. we are learning more about the heroic efforts in the chaotic evacuation of asiana flight 214. cabin manager is being hailed a hero. she said she was calm and only thinking about rescuing the next passenger. despite a broken tail bone, she worked to put out fires and get people out of the plane after it crash land at sfo on saturday. she was the last one off the burning plane. >> we are policemen, firemen, nurses, you know we don't just serve drinks and food. our main objective on the plane is to be the first responders and to get your butt off the plane. >> we are told two evacuation slides inflated inside the plane when it crashed. pining two attendant on the floor. crew millions deflated them with ax and saving their

low half-moon bay 59 for a high today. just 36 miles away, we find walnut creek which was 34 degrees warmer. that's a big temperature spread over 36 miles. 93 for a high in walnut creek. you want something in between, head over to union city. we are looking at high of 08 tomorrow. mostly sunny and mild. and a couple degrees cool owner wednesday but well within the comfort zone with a high of 78 degrees coming up on wednesday. now this map looks very similar to what i showed you about this time last week. big ridge to the south and east over the four corners. but it's not as hot outside for you and not in the 80s in the city and not 100s inlandch the difference is this high-- inland. the difference is the high is not sending as much hot air up into northern california and the bay areas. the four corner ridge will haik on for the next couple days. 90s inland today and it will be 90 tomorrow and wednesday before high pressure moves out. once it does lower pressure will pass by to the north. counterclockwise flow around it will enhance the onshore flow giving us cooler air blowing in

and a light to moderate onshore flow will increase the cloud cover and decrease your temperatures down to the 80s inland and likely to the upper 60s low 70s near the bay. we are mild and sunny for the most part. through wednesday, two more days. and on thursday, through the weekend, we will be a little cooler. a little cloudier but these are minor fluctuations i am not looking at any 100 degree temperatures because it's july i am not look at rainfall. it will be comfortable outside for the next several days. let's talk specifics. san jose warmer tomorrow and 86, 2 above the average of 84. and los altos 84. and hayward 78 with sunshine and concord 90 pittsburgh 93. and towards the delta fairfield 94 degrees. in a vado 81. almeeta 73. and clear lake 97 and st. helena 91 tomorrow. we will stay warm on wednesday. it will drop a few degrees on thursday and friday be cloudier near the bay but we will warm back up all be it gradually
